Myth: After I finish my studies, I will need to repay the financial assistance I received.

Initially, it is important to distinguish between gift aid and self-help aid.

Gift aid, such as scholarships and grants, is money for college that does not require repayment. Loans, on the other hand, are to be paid back after the 6-month grace period given after graduating. This gives you a chance to start a job in your chosen career and pay off any loans taken, and that is when interest usually starts accumulating.

Myth: My families income is too high or to low to apply for financial aid so I shouldn't even try filing for FAFSA.

It is essential for everyone to complete the FAFSA as it is the only way to potentially become eligible for merit scholarships, grants, and Federal student loans. In addition, many colleges require the FAFSA for their own financial aid programs. Even if you don’t qualify for federal loans, having FAFSA information can help colleges decide if you qualify for other financial aid programs, like work-study.
