UC and Cal State extend deadlines for Intent to Register due to FAFSA delays

The University of California and California State University systems announced Wednesday that they will extend the intent to register deadline for Fall 2024 for all first-year undergraduates no earlier than May 15.

The extension is due to delays and problems implementing the new the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application by the U.S. Department of Education. Last week, the Department announced that colleges and universities wouldn’t receive students’ FAFSA information until mid-March.

The extension would apply to all 23 CSU campuses and the nine undergraduate UC campuses.

“For prospective students who have applied for the fall 2024 term and received admission to one or more CSU campuses, this deadline extension allows them and their families additional time to review financial aid offers before making their decision to commit to a particular CSU,” said April Grommo, assistant vice chancellor of CSU Strategic Enrollment Management.

Typically CSU campuses would determine aid offers by March and ask admitted students to declare their intent to a campus by May 1.

A May 15 commitment deadline for first-year students would allow UC campuses to admit additional students promptly through the waitlist process, if needed. This date will also ensure that students have ample time to secure housing, visit campuses, and prepare for a successful college transition in the fall.

“The University wants to reassure students and their families that despite any FAFSA delays, we remain committed to helping them successfully navigate the financial aid process and access the state, federal and University resources they are entitled to,” said Shawn Brick, executive director of Student Financial Support at the UC Office of the President.
