FAFSA Myth vs. Fact: 3 Things You Think Are True (But Aren't)

FAFSA Myth vs. Fact: 3 Things You Think Are True (But Aren't)

These FAFSA myths could cost your family thousands in grants, scholarships, and college funding.

MYTH #1: "If I file the FAFSA, I'm agreeing to take student loans."

❌ MYTH

Many parents avoid filing the FAFSA because they think submitting the application automatically commits them to borrowing money.

✅ FACT

The FAFSA is simply an application for financial aid. Filing does not require you to accept loans.

In fact, completing the FAFSA is often the only way students can be considered for:

  • Federal grants

  • State grants

  • Work-study programs

  • Institutional aid

  • Many college scholarships

You can always decline any loan offers later.

Translation: No FAFSA = potentially leaving free money on the table.

MYTH #2: "Our income is too high. We won't qualify for aid."

❌ MYTH

One of the most expensive assumptions families make is believing their income automatically disqualifies them.

✅ FACT

Many colleges award aid based on far more than income alone, including:

  • Family size

  • Number of children in college

  • Assets

  • Special circumstances

  • Merit scholarships

  • Institutional funding

At EDFIN, we've seen families who assumed they wouldn't qualify discover significant aid opportunities after completing the process correctly.

The truth: You won't know what you're eligible for unless you apply.

MYTH #3: "Only high school seniors need to file FAFSA."

❌ MYTH

Some families think FAFSA is a one-time application.

✅ FACT

Students should file FAFSA every year they're in college.

Aid eligibility can change from year to year, and missing a renewal deadline could mean losing access to grants, scholarships, and other funding opportunities.

Remember: FAFSA is an annual process, not a one-time event.
